Global Investment Performance Standards

In order to attract assets in this competitive environment, more and more of today’s asset managers are applying internationally recognized standards to their performance measurement and reporting. Investors want assurance that they are doing business with a firm that is committed to integrity and want reliable performance metrics that allow them to compare the investment performance of their firm against others. Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) has sought to provide investors with a renewed sense of confidence.

OVERVIEW

Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) are standardized guidelines used by investment managers for creating performance presentations that ensure fair representation and full disclosure of investment performance results. Originally introduced in 1999 by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA Institute), GIPS were actually developed back in 1980. While complying with GIPS is voluntary, it has become a de facto requirement for investment managers to win institutional assets.

Industry quote:

"Fund managers must have sufficient historical data and supporting evidence to prove GIPS compliance, know where their data is stored, ensure its accuracy and its enterprise-wide consistency," says Lee Detlaff, vice president of SunGard’s Asset Arena product line which provides performance measurement. "The verification firm must be able to track how the performance was calculated through a solid audit trail and that means tight integration between the portfolio accounting system and the performance measurement system." – Securities Technology Monitor, April 5, 2010
