Commentary

The credit crisis has had profound effects not only on the global financial markets but on the internal operations of financial institutions. In the wake of the crisis and as firms prepare for new regulations such as Dodd-Frank, Basel III and Solvency II, they need to strengthen their risk management practices, optimize how they leverage capital, and increase efficiencies and automation across silos. That’s leading to a renewed focus on collateral management, liquidity and risk management.

On a more tactical level, today’s multi-instrument and derivatives-driven capital markets require cross-asset, enterprise level technology. The interplay of internal and external technologies and networks continues to grow in importance, as does the ability to automate all downstream activity and reconciliations and create a holistic view of data and activity across the enterprise. Firms need to be able to extend solutions to add instruments or valuation methodologies quickly, without waiting for the next release. The challenge for the industry is implementing horizontal solutions with deep vertical functionality and agile extensions that fit into an overall technology framework.
