An executive with 18 years’ experience in the securities lending industry, David Lewis is responsible for business development across EMEA for SunGard’s Astec Analytics business unit. Prior to joining SunGard, Mr. Lewis held a similar role as a vice president at Brown Brothers Harriman. Before that, he spent eight years in client relationship management, first at data vendor DataExplorers and then at JPMorgan. He has also worked in system development at OM Technology and ABN Amro.
Commentary
In the last two decades, securities lending and borrowing has evolved beyond all recognition. What began as a fail management process in the back office has become a front-office revenue center for both beneficial owners and market participants. The business has also evolved into a source of liquidity and efficient price discovery for an unsettled market.
Regulators and participants alike have sought to uncover more and more data regarding securities lending in order to understand its significance and make it a healthier, more vibrant and more profitable business. The key to achieving that goal is turning that data into actionable information. It is the responsibility of the data providers not only to deliver this information, but to help users make sense of it and assist them in using it to make their own programs, and indeed the wider market, a more efficient place to do business. There are many challenges ahead, not least from regulatory pressures, but these are the things that make this business fascinating.
