As vice president, product management, within SunGard’s energy and commodities business, Kevin Mossop helps to shape the physical gas and power solutions that SunGard delivers globally. A pioneer in solutions for pipeline transportation, Mr. Mossop has been with SunGard’s energy and commodities solutions business for nine years, joining through the acquisitions of Caminus and Altra. Prior to SunGard, he held executive positions in strategy and product management within energy businesses in Canada.
Kevin Mossop is an expert in trading, nominations and scheduling systems for physical energy, and in optimizing energy business processes through information technology. Mr. Mossop has spoken on the inter-relationships between physical gas and power, on challenges facing owners of physical assets, and on the impacts of changing regulatory environments. He has published articles about evolutions in energy trading and real-time operations in gas and power markets.
Commentary
Despite efforts to manage demand and develop alternative fuel types, gas and electricity pricing remains volatile. Smart metering, demand-side management, and real-time monitoring and scheduling are among the approaches used to address the supply/demand challenge. Increasingly complex, long-term structures and regulations on ownership during flow compound the decisions market participants must make within shorter timeframes and in response to greater demands for transparency. It is critical for today’s energy businesses to evaluate how information technology can best be applied to address these challenges and others stemming from an aging workforce and infrastructure.
