Change has been the only constant in the financial markets over the past few years. From the 2008 financial crisis and related bailouts to the rise of high-frequency trading firms and continued technological progress, market participants face a much more complicated trading world than existed just a few years ago.
For firms currently engaged in the business of derivatives trading, there are certainly many issues to address to manage their businesses effectively. Handling the areas of risk management and regulations such as Dodd-Frank will continue to be a focal point for these companies.
High-frequency trading firms will definitely play a role in derivatives trading too. Given their recent impact, it stands to reason that both high-frequency trading firms and other market participants will dictate what types of market structures will eventually win out – be they based on price-time priority, maker-taker pricing or another methodology.
