SunGard Achieves Green IT Savings

April 22, 2010 — Wayne, PA

As part of a green IT initiative to improve the energy efficiency of its data centers, SunGard’s financial systems business is on track to achieve more than $5 million in savings over the next five years. The project, which kicked off in 2009, virtualizes the servers in the twenty-five North America data centers operated by SunGard Financial Systems. SunGard’s Information Systems and Services organization estimated that the virtualization and consolidation project will save 1.5 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity and reduce SunGard’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1,000 metric tons every year. The project will ultimately enable SunGard Financial Systems to reduce the amount of space it requires and will allow it to consolidate its entire technology infrastructure into just five data centers.

Don Wood, chief information officer for SunGard Financial Systems, said, “Virtualizing and consolidating our technology infrastructure allows us to reallocate our resources strategically as we simplify our day-to-day operations and strengthen our ability to serve our customers. Green IT is first and foremost about good design.”

Ryan Whisnant, director of sustainability for SunGard, added, “This initiative is about reducing our costs and our environmental impact at the same time. As we commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day, we are reminded that we have many opportunities to make operational changes to minimize our impact on the environment while improving our competitiveness and customer service.”
