Managing Fund Valuations

Valuing private equity investments is a subject often discussed among investor. The labor intensive process to purchase these securities using appraisals instead of market pricing, is one factor that has led to the issuance of FAS 157, which aims to bring some clarity to private equity investment valuations, in addition to the valuation practices formed on all assets. FAS157 has not only introduced a heightened level of scrutiny to firms’ valuation procedures, bringing new restrictions and disclosure requirements, but also brought several business challenges with regard to the scope, complexity and resources needed to adopt the new requirement.

Investran allows fund managers to gather key performance indicators (KPIs) directly from the investments themselves. Senior management at investment companies or fund managers of fund investments have the ability to directly communicate with their private equity sponsors or investors using a orchestrated workflow to share these KPIs. The supporting documentation of these KPIs are maintained and communicated, and eventually warehoused in the Investran solution. This archived information can then be used for the valuations and books of record in Investran’s general ledger, where it stores historical valuations, as well as the method used to value these hard-to-value assets.
